America’s First Female Corporate CEO

Posted by innovativeip on September 19, 2010

After having missed out on a Patent of the Day for a few days thanks to a computer failure, I’m pleased to be back up and running.   I hope we didn’t miss a stellar invention, but if so, we’ll have to catch it next year when the days roll around again.

In the mean time, today’s Patent of the Day is U.S. Patent no. 182,346, issued September 19, 1876 for a carpet sweeper.

Today's Patent of the Day

The patent was issued to Melville R. Bissell, who passed away just a few years after the Bissell Company was founded, BUT, it was his wife, Anna Bissell, who took over as America’s first female corporate CEO all the way back in 1889.  She led the company to become an international success story.  And, not only is the company still going strong, I still see people using the type of carpet sweeper described in this patent from time to time, usually in restaurants as closing time approaches and quiet clean up begins.  A product design that can continue to be relevant for over 125 years, and the first female CEO…both great achievements.
