Intermittent Windshield Wipers

Posted by innovativeip on August 31, 2010

If you saw the movie “Flash of Genius”, then you are already familiar with today’s Patent of the Day, U.S. Patent no. 3,602,790, issued August 31, 1971, to Robert W. Kearns, for an “Intermittent Windshield Wiper System”.

Today's Patent of the Day

The Gary, Indiana Ph.D. engineer/inventor and holder of this and a couple of other patents on the technology, sued Ford Motor Company for patent infringement, reportedly settling for $10 million, and took Chrysler Corporation to trial, acting as his own attorney for over 20 years,  ultimately receiving about $30 million in damages from Chrysler.   His story was the basis for the “Flash of Genius” movie, and his legal case is still cited as precedent in recent caselaw regarding the issue of obviousness.
