The Predecessor to Our Calculators

Posted by innovativeip on August 21, 2010

Today’s Patent of the Day is U.S. Patent no. 388,117, issued August 21, 1888 to William S. Burroughs.

Today's Patent of the Day

The patent was filed in 1885, and Burroughs formed the American Arithmometer Company in 1886.  The name was later changed to the well-recognized and successful Burroughs Corporation, and ultimately became Unisys as part of  a merger.  Looking at the mechanical workings of this early calculating machine, you can’t help but appreciate the ingenuity that Mr. Burroughs possessed in coming up with it.  If you’d like to read the patent and view the drawings of the amazing inner workings of this device, you can find it at www.innovative-ip.net, on the “of interest” page, along with all of the previous “Patent of the Day” patents.  Enjoy!
