Posted by innovativeip on August 12, 2010

Today’s Patent of the Day is the first patent issued to Isaac Singer, founder of I.M. Singer & Co.  U.S. Patent no. 8,294 was issued August 12, 1851, and was the foundational cornerstone of the Singer Company, now a multi-national powerhouse, over 150 years old.

Today's Patent of the Day

Worldwide sales surpassed 250,000 units as far back as the 1880’s, with numerous patents to follow the first, annual sales that have been in the $ billions for decades, and millions of machines currently sold each year.  Isaac Singer reportedly passed away in 1875, but the Singer Company remained private until 1991.  More of the interesting Singer history can be found on the company website at http://www.singerco.com/company/history.html.

Of course, if you’d like to read the entire patent, and see all of the drawings, you can download the patent at http://www.innovativeip.us/images/pat8294.8.12.pdf.  Enjoy!
