Everybody Loves a Slinky Dog

Posted by innovativeip on August 7, 2010

I have not yet gotten to see the latest TOY STORY movie, but I’ve heard great reviews.  Thoughts are on TOY STORY because today’s Patent of the Day is U.S. Design Patent no. 382,029, issued August 7, 1997, for a SLINKY DOG.

Today's Patent of the Day

This is, however, not the original SLINKY DOG.  That was patented under Design patent no. D179949, back in 1957.  It is reported that the original inventor received about $70,000/year in royalties for the term of the patent.  (Let’s have a collective, “why can’t I think of something simple like that?”)  Her product was no longer on the market by the time TOY STORY came along and began selling its redesigned version.  It’s a safe bet the new royalty stream figure for the TOY STORY version might just have another digit…or two.

If you’d like to take a look at all of the figures in the design patent for the more recent SLINKY DOG, and today’s patent subject, please visit http://www.innovativeip.us/images/patd382029.8.7.pdf.  Enjoy!
