Nikola Tesla, a Prolific Inventor that Changed the World
Posted by innovativeip on July 16, 2010
Nikola Tesla was an amazing man, credited with inventing the AC motor, radio, the Tesla coil, and remote control technology. He certainly changed the world, with hundreds of patents to his credit. Today’s Patent of the Day is his 25th U.S. Patent, Issued July 16, 1889, entitled “Dynamo Electric Machine.”
A 19th century example of successful technology transfer and commercialization, Tesla is reported to have sold a portfolio of AC motor patents to Westinghouse Corporation in 1890 for $5,000, 150 shares of stock, and royalties of $2.50 per horsepower of electrical capacity sold. Tesla invested in a new lab and kept his inventions coming; Westinghouse won the bid for illuminating the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893 with Tesla’s AC motor, beating General Electric and its DC power proposal. The United States was forever changed and AC power has remained prominent ever since.
